What is a Waller?
One who builds walls perhaps? There are a lot of walls about so there are a lot of Wallers.
There is a magazine - The Waller & Dyker - the official magazine of The Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain, published three times a year and mailed directly to all members.

Spelling variations of the name include: Waller, Wallere and others.
First found in in Nottinghamshire where they were Lords of the manor of Newark from very ancient times.
Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: John Walleer who settled in Virginia in 1606, fourteen years before the "Mayflower"; Charles Wal1er who settled in Virginia in 1623; Andrew Waller settled in the Barb and others.
The Waller coats of arms always seem to have a Walnut tree.

George and Leticia Waller - George is my Great, Great Grandfather. Willie Rowland is the boy standing and is my Grandfather. Arthur George is on Leticia's lap. Annie is on George's lap.
What a charming Victorian photograph. How did they get everyone to sit so still.

Rik Waller - no relation but the most famous Waller at the moment is Rik Waller, the young 31 stone singer who reached the top 10 out of many thousands of entrants in ITV's Pop Idol search. Unfortunately he had a bad throat and had to withdraw. Shame because he sings well. His new record is I will always love you and reached no. 6 in the Top 10.
Fitness trainer to the stars Anthony Brown has taken on the task of slimming Rik down. Anthony works for Lotus Health Suite at Worthing Leisure Centre. He has been called on to succeed where Celebrity Fit Club failed as he helps the 31-stone to hit his ideal weight.
In May 2003 was placed No 14 as a slob in the Worst Britton contest, only beaten by Robbie Williams, Charlotte Church, some of the Royals, and Tony Blair who was top worst.

Sir Richard Waller - In 1415, the distinguished soldier of Agincourt, captured the French General, Charles, Duke of Orleans, who afterward became the King of France. Sir Richard entertained his captive at his home in Kent for twenty-four years, awaiting ransom. Through his kind treatment, a warm friendship sprang up between them and after the Duke returned to France he (the Duke) caused to be rebuilt the somewhat decayed Waller mansion at Groomsbridge.
Sir Waller also rebuilt the Church of Speldhurst, placing the Orlean's Arms which had been granted to him by his prisoner to quarter with his own upon a stone over the South Porch. Speldhurst is near Southborough, south of Tonbridge. http://www.speldhurst.org/church/history.htm

Sir William Waller born c. 1598, Knole, Kent, Eng. died Sept. 19, 1668, London
A leading Parliamentary commander in southern England during the first three years of the Civil War (1642–51).
Waller fought for Bohemia in the early campaigns of the Thirty Years' War (1618–48). In 1620, served with Sir Horace Vere in securing the possessions of King James son in law Frederick Elector Palatine, King of Bohemia. It was at this time that Waller was involved with Ralph Hopton in the escape of Queen Elizabeth of Bohemia "The Winter Queen" through the snows of what is now the Czech Republic.
He was knighted in 1622.
The Sealed Crest
Elected to the Long Parliament in 1640, he became a colonel in the Parliamentary army upon the outbreak of the Civil War. In September 1642 he captured Portsmouth and, soon after, several other towns of southeastern England, thereby earning the nickname “William the Conqueror.” Promoted to the rank of general, he seized Hereford, Herefordshire, in April 1643. Nevertheless, on July 13 Sir Ralph Hopton severely defeated him at Roundway Down, Wiltshire.
In January 1644, Waller captured Arundel Castle and Bodium Castle, leaving the later in ruins. He was seen on Goring beach inspecting the wreck of the Spanish ship St James. He prevented the Royalists from invading Sussex and stopped Hopton's advance on London in March, but he was defeated by King Charles I near Banbury, Oxfordshire, in June.
The setbacks suffered by Waller and other talented commanders led to demands for a reorganization of the Parliamentarian forces. Waller was evidently the first to suggest the creation of a professional army. This New Model Army was formed in February 1645, and two months later Waller resigned his commission.
Waller was a leader of the Presbyterians in Parliament during their unsuccessful struggle (1645–48) with the army, which was dominated by Independents (radical Puritans).
The Parliamentarians headed by Oliver Cromwell eventually prevailed, and Charles I was beheaded outside Westminster Hall in 1649.
For opposing Oliver Cromwell's Commonwealth regime, Waller was imprisoned several times between 1649 and 1659. Although elected to the Convention Parliament of 1660, Waller never took his seat and subsequently received no political encouragement from King Charles II.

Richard Waller FRS
Richard Waller was elected to the Royal Society in 1681. Waller's research stretched across a whole range of phenomena. Waller's articles in the Society's Philosophical Transactions included such subjects as observations of glow-worms, descriptions of the tongues of wood-peckers and a study of lip-reading. Fellows were also particularly grateful for Waller's artistic skills, as he not only contributed illustrations to works of others but also oversaw the engravings for Francis Willoughby's and John Ray's History of Fishes.

Thomas (Fats) Waller, American pianist and composer (1904-43) who was one of the few outstanding jazz musicians to win wide commercial fame, though this was achieved at a cost of obscuring his purely musical ability under a cloak.
Fats represents the great "final flowering" of the Harlem Stride piano style. He was also a major composer of pop tunes of the 30\'s. Unfortunately, some otherwise learned jazz critics unfairly dismiss Fats Waller because of his great popularity as a singer and musical clown.

Edmund Waller, English poet and politician (1606-87). Famous for his poem Go Lovely Rose. His adoption of smooth, regular versification prepared the way for the heroic couplet's emergence by the end of the century as the dominant form of poetic expression.

Maureen Waller
1700: Scenes from London Life (Sceptre £8.99)
Maureen Waller takes the lid off London life in the Daniel Defoe era, often quoting him as a witness, and reveals a capital of extreme contrasts. It was one of the most visually magnificent cities in Europe, with St Paul's cathedral slowly nearing completion, yet at the same time travellers could smell it on the wind as they approached, and disease, poverty, and crime were at epidemic levels.
