The Hot List
The hot-list of most popular search engines comes from the 4261 referers to the Waller website during April 2001, with additions from Search Engine Watch. Many of the search engines use material from other search engines, most notably Dmoz who supply a number of important engines. Yahoo currently uses Google. MSN currently uses Excite
Note that the links are set for UK users because that is where I live. You might like to check that you have the correct country version for your needs.

Google
http://www.google.com Apparently 46% of webs searchers start here. With many different specialist areas like images, and newsgroups; and a News search is being tested.
Includes suggestions if you spell something wrong.
Has a translate button which sometimes renders a useful view into foreign language sites.
Sponsored websites are displayed on the right as a separate list.
If the site is currently not available then click the cache link and you can still see it. It is very easy to include a Google search box on your website with an option to search just your personal site, or the whole of www ( I have it on my Goring homepage now).

Search Engine Health Warning
The rules change all the time; these words may not be accurate today.
It takes a long time for the Search Engines to wake up to your website, and even then you are unlikely to be in the top 20 references. Do not rely on the search engines for your sole marketing; treat it as an added bonus if they list you at all.

META Statements
Excite and Lycos ignore META statements. The rest seem to like them. They all want good title statements, and will read the first words of text that they find in the HTML code.

Paying for Listing
People are going off sites that give priority to people who have paid. What they want is information relevant to their immediate needs. Paying Dmoz for a faster check by the humans may be worthwhile, but then there is no guarantee that they will like you.

Automated Submission
There are a number of companies which will submit to all or some of the search engines monthly either free or for a fee. We have the impression that most search engines will give lower priority to these submissions. And some have taken steps to discourage automated submission since so many of the sites submitted are 404's and have either moved or discontinued.

Portal Sites
Several search engines have included news, weather, entertainment listings etc and are good for use as a portal to go first when you sign on.

Checking
Opinion is divided as to whether you should resubmit your URL to a search engine when it is already present. It probably does no harm and may do some good, particularly if you have made some changes. You can check by search on keywords, or search on a full URL which is http://www.waller.co.uk and in some cases you need not quote the first parts.
You can sometimes try:
Check if listed: search on url:waller.co.uk (or whatever)
Check who is linking to you link:www.waller.co.uk

Deleting Pages
Resubmit the URLs of the pages to be deleted and the robot will look and find the 404 message and delete the reference. InfoSeek invites you to send them an Email if there are several.
