Human beings come in a wide range of shapes and sizes, usually divided into three broad categories.
Your membership of one of these groups is fixed at birth, either though genetic factors, or your mother's diet. You cannot change your membership, any more than you can change your shoe-size. A 5ft 10in middle aged man or woman can have an acceptable weight between 10.5 and 13.5 stone (67-86kg) BMI 22-28 For youth, the greatest risk in being overweight is in heart attack. When older, grossly overweight gives a danger of diabetes. Being underweight is more dangerous; the dangerously under-weighted die much earlier, whereas the plump live for ever. However, there are other risks in life. People whose surnames begin with the letters S-Z, and thus are always at the back of the traditional alphabetic queue, have a greater incidence of ulcers and tend to die 12 years earlier.
